Numerous medical specialisms intervene one way or another in dysphagia, including speech therapists, otorhinolaryngologists, gastroenterologists, dentists, neurologists and nutritionists.

 

The current trend is to train professionals in the corresponding knowledge from all the specialisms so as to tackle dysphagia with an overall perspective. In some forums this incipient field is referred to as the specialism of deglutology. The high prevalence in elderly people along with growing life expectancy is likely to lead to a demand for health professionals to combat this disease.
